This Sashiko embroidery kit comes with all of the materials needed to make a large needle/craft/sewing case. It includes fiive skeins of fine sashiko threads by the Japanese brand, Olympus Threads. I used half of the five skeins to make the finished needle case, so there will be plenty left over for other projects.
Instructions are included to make a large 20cm x 20cm needle/craft case with the materials in the kit.
The case is constructed from two handy envelope pockets, one of which is lined with the wool blanket wadding, so that needles can be stored safely within it. The other pocket could house embroidery fabric, threads and scissors. These type of kits are what I use when transporting my things to a workshop, I sometimes have one for each project, but I have sewn quite a few!
The threads are beautifully smooth to stitch with. Sashiko thread is none divisible and very strong, the threads are made in Japan by the iconic brand of Olympus, also included is a pack of Sashiko needles by the same brand.
The discovery of my new method of pattern transfer opens up more possibilities in being able to work more freely than traditional Sashiko embroidery kits, making Sashiko more accessible for beginners, and for people like me that like to take the easy route. This is especially so compared to the old methods of following printed Sashiko fabric that have stitch lengths marked on the fabric, or the ancient prick and pounce method whereby pricking holes in the transfer paper and then dusting it with a powder to leave a mark, which can be quite fiddly. The kit is perfect for beginners as only one stitch is involved in the whole of the design, which is a simple running stitch. Blanket stitch is used to join the felt squares up, to make the two envelope pockets.
By not having to follow individual stitch markings, it results in a much more free way of working, which is more akin to Boro. To avoid unneccessary processes and delays to stitching time, in these Sashiko kits I have included Vlieseline water soluble fleece to place over the embroidery pattern that is contained in the booklet. Then the pattern is traced with a pen or marker, which is then affixed to the fabric to be sewn onto and later removed with cold water. It doesn’t matter if mistakes are made when tracing the design, as the paper will be washed away later.
